U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he would be signing a rare earth mineral deal with Ukraine “very shortly,” emphasizing the strategic importance of critical minerals while also expressing optimism about a potential ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.
Speaking ahead of signing an executive order to dismantle the Department of Education, Trump highlighted efforts to boost domestic production of critical minerals. “Moments ago, I signed an executive order to dramatically increase production of critical minerals and rare earths. It’s a big thing in this country. We’re also signing agreements to unlock rare earths and minerals worldwide, particularly in Ukraine,” he said.
Rare earth minerals are essential for modern technologies, including electronics, defense systems, and renewable energy. While China dominates the global refining process, nations like the U.S., India, and Germany are among the largest importers, while countries such as Australia and Chile have seen rising exports.
Trump also referenced recent phone conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, expressing hope for an end to the ongoing conflict. “We’re doing very well with regard to Ukraine and Russia. We would love to see this come to an end. Hopefully, we can save thousands of lives. I believe we’ll get it done,” he stated.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt later clarified that the administration had “moved beyond the economic minerals deal” and was now focused on long-term peace negotiations.
Additionally, Trump signed a proclamation commemorating the 250th anniversary of Patrick Henry’s historic “Give me liberty or give me death” speech, underscoring his administration’s focus on American heritage and values.
